Whether it’s the engine on a commercial jet or the most efficient pool pump motor at your home, ensuring that the motor is running appropriately and at a high efficiency output is vital for several reasons.
For one, high efficiency motors typically result in less fuel consumption, whatever the fuel source or type of fuel that may be. As motors use less fuel or electricity, as is the case with many smaller motors, the owner or operator of that motor is left with less total consumption and therefore smaller energy expenses in the long run.

How to Determine Motor Efficiency
At its most basic level, the efficiency of a motor is essentially a calculation of the power output generated by the motor with respect to the amount of energy that piece of equipment consumes. The higher the power output a motor provides and the lower amount of energy consumed, the more efficient the motor is.
For example, the typical motor efficiency of a brushless DC motor is reportedly in the 85 to 90 percent margin, whereas the more traditional brushed DC motor operates at a lower level of efficiency and is closer to the 75 to 80 percent range. The most efficient motor, therefore, would operate at 100 percent and have the ability to produce a power output at an exact equivalent of the fuel or energy that is consumed.
Induction motors rely on magnetic energy to spin the rotor rather than a direct electrical connection, making them more efficient than DC motors. Induction motor efficiency is reportedly as high as 97 percent, but can be lower around 85 percent.
The efficiency a motor – including those that rely on magnets to function – can be impacted in several ways, including losses due to the dissipation of magnetic energy or mechanical losses. The latter can include friction between moving and stationary parts, which is one thing that can affect brushed motors and fan motor efficiency.
