Gas Products Parts & Components Glossary

Gas appliances, like gas ranges, ovens, and cooktops, are powered by natural gas. They use special parts called gas burners that allow you to control how much heat reaches your food so it is either low and slow or high and fast.

These five components make up the inner workings of a gas range, oven, or cooktop. The best way to understand these gas parts is by breaking them down into their separate functions: there are igniters that light the pilot lights on your countertop appliance, the pilot lights themselves (also known as pilot valves), and the main burners with their own valves for adjusting heat output and gas-powered electronic igniters that light them all from a remote location.

Gas parts can be confusing if you’ve never had a gas-powered appliance before. Luckily we’re here to explain what they are and what they do.

Igniters

An igniter is the part of a gas appliance that lights the pilot light. Igniters are different from oven pilot lights because they don’t necessarily stay lit all the time. While oven pilot lights are on all the time, igniters are activated only when you turn the burner on and then shut off when you turn it off. Igniters are mounted near the burner and get very hot when the burner is on.

They produce enough heat to ignite the gas in the pilot light and then extinguish it when the burner shuts off. If the igniter is malfunctioning and not producing enough heat, you may need a professional to replace it for you. On the other hand, if it gets too hot and sparking, you’ll need a new one.

Pilot Lights

The two most common types of pilot lights are the standing pilot light and the pilot ignition system. Standing pilot lights are lit all the time, even when the burner is off.

Pilot ignition systems are turned on and off along with the burner. Because these two pilot light types work differently, it is important to know which type your appliance employs.

Standing pilot lights are easier to light, but pilot ignition systems are a more efficient gas product in terms of transferring gas to the burner. Standing pilot lights are found in older appliances and are also used in some commercial appliances.

Pilot ignition systems are often found in newer appliances, especially in residential kitchens. The main difference between the two is that standing pilot lights sometimes require more time to light. Pilot ignition systems, on the other hand, can be lit with an electronic spark, making them easier to operate.

Gas Burners

Gas burners are the part of the appliance that heats the food. There are usually two, three, or four burners depending on the appliance. Each burner has a valve that you can open and close to regulate the amount of heat going to the burner.

If a burner is off, you can’t control the amount of heat coming from that burner. If you have a standing pilot light, one burner is lit at all times. If you have a pilot ignition system, you have to ignite the burner before you can use it.

When you turn the burner off, you have to manually shut off the gas to the burner by closing the valve. Automatic shut-off valves are a safety feature and are found mostly on modern appliances.

What Is a Gas Blower

A gas blower is an additional piece of equipment you may find in your appliance. A gas blower is activated by the main gas valve and forces air through the burners to push the heat out. Some gas appliances have a gas blower, while others don’t. If your appliance has a gas blower, it will be marked on the diagram inside your owner manual.

A gas blower is important because it helps distribute the heat evenly throughout the appliance. Gas blowers also make it possible for gas appliances to run on high heat, even if your electricity goes out. Electricity is needed to spark the burners and pilot lights.
